The “Prayer of Faith” From James

Nothing quite symbolises the Christian faith more than prayer. It is an activity that we’re instructed to do all the time (1 Thess. 5:17) and it’s one way we can actually know God’s will for us–if we’re so attuned. But, the ‘prayer of faith’ according to James is perhaps a nugget which needs to be digested alone:

“Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.”
-James 5:13-16 (NRSV)

When to Pray

Suffering, cheerful or sick; the answer is to pray. The answer to each of these scenarios is simply to pray. It’s ironic that at each of these three times we’re usually tempted to pray less.[1]

In any life situation it can’t be wrong to pray. And perhaps the time we really forget to pray is when life is just routine and nothing much to write home about. When life is simple drudgery and we’re bored we never think to pray. But we should.

Regarding our praying during times of suffering, “James is… not advocating a stoic or impassive response to adversity, but [he's] allowing for a positive response to hardship.”[2] This is the truth of the believing relationship with God. We can’t deny our problems.

But how many of us shout our praises to God when things are especially good? Singing songs is the traditional way to enjoy these times and remember God as we engage our emotions and spirit in worship.

Not only should we memorise and meditate on verses of Scripture that can help us recall God’s truth, we need to routinely hum sweet melodies of praise to our Master–engaging the mind in the process.

The Prayer of Faith

Recently, our local pastor was anointed with oil by the elders in a church service in seeking healing from a worrisome medical condition. This offer was then widened to anyone suffering and seeking healing–it is no snake-oil technique. James has exactly this practice in mind. This prayer of faith, executed by anointed elders, has released millions from their various maladies in the name of the Lord.

Once conducted, it is appropriate for the believer and those who’ve prayed, and anyone else present, to believe that God will heal as asked–according to his will.

It is no coincidence that James relates the effectiveness and power of the prayer of faith with the righteousness of the anointed elder of the church. God can’t abide in sin, so when we present our petitions to him in faith and obedience, he is faithful, and he will do it (1 Thess. 5:24) if it is his will.

The calling on of the elders to assist is also about a community response toward God that all in that community be intimately involved in the process of healing–that the elders, too, lend their spiritual passion and anointing to that task.

At the prayer of faith mentioned above, the entire congregation were invited to participate by raising arms toward their pastor as he was anointed with the oil in God’s name by the elders. That is the unified faith of two to three hundred people crying out to God in faith for healing.

The community are encouraged to confess their sins to one another in authentic humility. This is so people are made right with each other, and with God. Most of our sins are against people, but ultimately they’re against God. Prayer is often the best medium for confession.

The prayer of faith is about some simple but powerful truths coming together so the person subject to the prayer can be raised (healed) as Jesus was raised.

In summary, the prayer of faith should be requested; made corporately; practiced expressively; be God-centred and faith-filled; and lastly, it must be comprehensive and effective.[3]

The prayer of faith in its most basic concept is simply asking in faith in line with Matthew 7:7 and James 1:5-8. Ask in faith and we stand to be blessed with deliverance subject to God’s will.

Extra-Sensory Perception (ESP) – What is It?

Have you ever had a feeling that you just could not shake? No matter how hard you tried, it persisted and you just knew something was wrong. There are distinctive kinds of Extra Sensory Perception (ESP).

The ability to see things that others cannot, such as future events is one of the unexplained aspects of this phenomena. The visions almost always appear as a warning of what is to come. The visions are described by those who see them as being very real. It is as if it is happening right in front of them.

The belief in those who have this aptitude is that most everyone is born with it. Have you ever watched a child have conversations with people who are not there? While many believe this is a normal behavior for children and their friends are imaginary, to the child the friend is really there. How do we know this is an imaginary person? Since we cannot see them, we assume they are not there. However, it could be that children have not learned to doubt and are more receptive to other worlds.

There have been many cases documented of people who knew things were going to happen before they actually did. This includes people who are separated by many miles. Therefore they would have no way of knowing anything about what was happening at the time by any physical means.

What about those who just have a feeling about something? Is this considered ESP as well? Those who experience ESP say they cannot describe exactly how it feels – they just know something is wrong or about to happen. There is at this time no reason to believe that ESP is not a valid phenomenon.

Choosing a Bed for Your Dog

Does your dog enjoy sleeping with you at night? Although cuddling with a pet can keep owner and dog warm and snuggly, keep in mind that most animals are not as clean as people, nor do they always follow the same sleep patterns. A dog can track mud, grass, and even nature’s business between your sheets, not to mention fleas and ticks. He might want to go for a walk at 3 a.m. when all you want to do is sleep. These are some of the common reasons why pets deserve a bed of their own. The nesting routine is as old as time, so providing your dog with his own place to sleep can create a sense of security that will help to keep your pet calm and well adjusted, not to mention help you get a good night’s sleep.

But how do you know which type of bed will best suit your canine’s needs? Consider the following criteria before shopping for your dog’s bedroom furniture.

1. Get the right size bed for your animal. How big will he get? If you have a large breed, get a bed with enough size to accommodate his full-grown stature. Ask the vet how tall and heavy your pet is expected to get, especially if he is a mixed breed. Then you can estimate the size of bed that will be needed. One that is too small will make your dog feel cramped, and he’ll probably find another sleeping spot. On the other hand, an overly large bed could let your little Chihuahua feel insecure and unprotected, likewise leading to his hunt for a new location.

2. Train a new puppy where to sleep. Like children, pets need guidance about where to go or what to do. Keep your pet’s bed in the same place to establish a routine. This might be in the laundry room, family room, the deck, or a doghouse. Don’t let a puppy drag its bed all over the place or he will never learn where he’s supposed to stay at night. Get in the habit of putting your dog to bed at the same time each night, and he will soon get used to it.

3. Choose durable materials. A foam mattress can provide solid support for the larger frames of full-grown pets, whereas small piece-type filling will lend more flexibility to a bed, and is better suited to small dogs or puppies. Check to be sure the cover is removable and washable, and launder it every week or two, using hot water and mild detergent to kill fleas and ticks. Teach your puppy not to chew his bedding, which will quickly destroy it and force you to buy another. A smart rap on the nose with a newspaper or a squirt of water from a spray bottle when he is caught in the act ought to do it.

4. Keep the bed out of the way to prevent accidents. Let all family members know where the bed will be kept, and tuck it into a nook or cranny where no one is likely to trip over it when carrying laundry or hurrying past that area. Your dog will be able to sleep better in a quiet, semi-protected environment.

Although buying your dog a bed should not be as time-consuming or costly as buying human furniture, it nevertheless pays to plan ahead and take time in making the best possible choice for all concerned.
